EDMOND, Okla. – Too much of a good thing can really be a problem.
Just ask the folks operating the animal shelter in Edmond.
Their animal population has exploded in recent weeks with highly-adoptable pets.
The problem is, the number of people seeking animals has dropped.
On top of that, some residents actually surrender their animals to the shelter because they’re planning to leave town on vacation.
Inez Burnham said, “I have a little girl with autism and she is going to get a puppy because she’s had straight As ever since she started school.”
Edmond Animal Control Capt. Nicki Smith said, “To give you an idea, we have a total of 290 animals in our care right now including those in foster care. The shelter is designed to hold 22 dogs and we have 88 in our care right now.”
The shelter also has around 120 cats and it was designed for less than half that number.
While Edmond does euthanize ill or aggressive animals, their policy is not to kill any pet that is adoptable and that policy has them bulging at the seams right now.
